Musculoskeletal disorders affect the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments    and bones of the body and affect people of all ages. Conditions such as

Osteoarthritis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis cause pain, disability, and depression.  We are conducting important clinical research to help improve care and treatment for our patients.


Your NHS trust hospital supports 12 clinical studies on musculoskeletal

conditions that are currently recruiting participants:


1. Adjacent Segment Disc Degeneration (ASDD) multicentre study


     Long term follow up (>10 years) of patients with chronic low back pain        from 3 trials comparing fusion and non-operative care. Is Adjacent

     Segment Disc Degeneration (ASDD) more likely in patients treated

     with fusion?

2.  BRAGGS Study

Investigation of genes influencing response to treatment with Infliximab,

Etanercept and Adalumimab in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and

related arthropathies

Summary

There are two parts to the study: The Cross Sectional Arm - for patients on an anti TNF drug and registered on the BSRBR. One single blood sample required for DNA testing. The Prospective Arm - for new patients about to start an anti TNF drug. We will be collecting the clinical, serological, psychological and genetic data in place of the BSRBR.


3.  TABUL study

The role of ultrasound compared to biopsy of temporal arteries in the

diagnosis and treatment of giant cell arteritis (TABUL).
